SU7 will come in two versions, one with a range of up to 668 km on a single charge and the other with a range of up to 800 km

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi presented its first electric vehicle this Thursday (28) and immediately announced that it intended to become one of the five largest car manufacturers in the world.

The vehicle, called the SU7, with the abbreviation SU for Speed Ultra, is a highly anticipated model that the company’s chief executive, Lei Jun, highlighted as having “superelectric motor” technology capable of delivering faster acceleration speeds than Tesla cars and Porsche electric vehicles, for example.

But the car — which will likely go on sale within a few months — is being announced at a time when China’s auto market — the world’s largest — is facing overcapacity and slowing demand, which has fueled a price war.

This did not stop Lei Jun from outlining big ambitions.

“Working hard over the next 15 to 20 years, we will become one of the top five automobile manufacturers in the world, striving to elevate China’s overall automotive sector,” he said at the presentation.

Those plans include building “a dream car comparable to Porsche and Tesla,” he added.

The SU7 is also expected to attract customers due to its shared operating system with Xiaomi’s popular cell phones and other electronic devices. Your drivers will have seamless access to the company’s existing portfolio of mobile apps.

The SU7 will come in two versions, one with a range of up to 668 km on a single charge and the other with a range of up to 800 km. In comparison, Tesla’s Model S has a range of up to 650 km.

The price has not yet been announced. Lei said the cost will be “indeed a bit high, but everyone will find it justifiable.”
