The Russian gas company Gazprom delivered 28.3 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe last year, which is 55.6 percent less year-on-year. This was reported today by the Reuters agency, which is based on its own calculations. Gas exports from Russia to Europe, which used to be Gazprom’s main market, have fallen sharply due to the political fallout from the conflict in Ukraine. Russia then started exporting more raw materials to China or India.
Calculations based on data from European gas transport group Entsog and Gazprom’s daily reports on gas transit through Ukraine show that average daily Russian gas exports via pipeline to Europe fell to 77.6 million cubic meters last year from 174.8 million in 2022.
According to Gazprom data and Reuters calculations, Russia delivered a total of about 63.8 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe in 2022 via various routes. Gazprom has not published its own statistics since the beginning of last year.
Russia is trying to compensate for the gradual loss of Europe by redirecting the flow of gas to China. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said at the end of December that deliveries to China exceeded 22 billion cubic meters last year.
Last year, this export amounted to roughly fifteen and a half billion cubic meters. According to Novak, contracts are now being finalized regarding the planned Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which would significantly increase the capacity to transport Russian gas to China.
According to Novak, almost all oil exports from Russia went to China and India last year. Europe’s share of oil exports has dropped to roughly four to five percent from around forty to 45 percent, the Russian deputy prime minister said.
