Nothing is certain about the future of AI technologies, but three things are becoming increasingly clear, according to Business Insider : AI will impact and change millions of jobs in the coming years.
It will probably make some employees more productive. It will probably replace some employees.
The question becomes in this context: how many employees – and which jobs – will be affected – positively or negatively – by the evolution of AI?
It is obvious to all corporations that technological changes are inherent in many types of tasks, which can provide new opportunities in the labor market or improve productivity in the current workplace.
Thus, while the adoption of AI technologies could help some employees become more productive, spend less time on boring tasks, earn higher salaries and even have a four-day work week, others could be faced with more competition, earn lower wages, or even see AI replace their jobs. Lower-wage jobs may be most at risk of being replaced by AI.
Business Insider’s analysis did not identify specific jobs or industries that are most likely to be adversely affected by AI, but the employees most at risk of being replaced are estimated to be those with lower performance requirements—that is, their tasks work have a lower degree of difficulty or complexity and thus could be automated.
Among the potential downsides of AI that Business Insider warns about is exacerbating income inequality, especially if it displaces employment in lower-wage jobs and complements higher-wage jobs.
Whether the trade-offs coming from the AI boom will be a positive thing remains to be seen.
