The app launched a feature that automatically saves your most recent plays for offline listening.
Unlike the download feature, Spotify’s offline backup doesn’t require you to tap any buttons manually. The app automatically creates a playlist called «offline backup ,» with songs you’ve recently listened to or had queued up, including both downloaded and cached ones. According to the company, this list evolves over time, adapting to your listening habits.
When you open Spotify offline, the offline backup list is the first thing you see under the message: “No data, no drama .” You can also organize songs by mood or mood with categories like Calm, Energetic, Indie Pop, Romantic, and more. Selecting one of these displays a list of songs that fit that genre or mood.
The app mixes your downloaded songs with music it thinks you might like , and in most cases, the experience is pretty good. Plus, you can add the offline backup to your library for quick access at any time.
The songs in this offline playlist are not part of your downloaded playlists, nor do they appear in the offline search feature within Your Library, which has not been working properly for some time. You can, however, search for music within this playlist. While downloaded songs have a download icon next to them, there is no clear indication of whether a song is part of this new feature.
To make sure the offline backup feature works, follow these steps:
- You have the latest version of the app.
- You’ve listened to at least five songs recently.
- You have the offline listening option activated (Settings > Data saver > Offline listening).
Spotify’s new feature is available globally for Premium users . It’s rolling out to Android , iOS , as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay . At the time of writing, it worked on my Apple iPhone 16 Pro, but not on my Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.
