Venice doubles its tourist rate by 2025

The rate could lead to an increase of up to €10 per traveller for last-minute bookings.

A few days ago, the municipal authorities of Venice confirmed that in 2025 the city will expand its tax for tourists. As a result, the amount that each visitor will have to pay to enter the capital of Veneto will increase from the current 10 euros, doubling its price.

This fee will not apply, however, to tourists who have hotel reservations in the historic city centre , just as residents, visitors born in Venice, students and workers are exempt from paying the fee.

Following the new measure, the mayor of the Italian city, Luigi Brugnaro , stressed that the tax «aims to help the city and its citizens fight against excessive tourism and avoid large influxes of visitors during public holidays and busy weekends.»

Furthermore, this new rate will only apply from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays from April 18 to July 27 , for a total of 54 days. Therefore, the number of inclusive days is doubled compared to those activated by the measure approved last year.

The rate will also apply only during peak hours, i.e. from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In 2024, the city of Venice announced that it would introduce the much-debated tax on tourists, as it narrowly missed being included on the UN list of heritage sites in danger due to the impact of mass tourism. This is a payment system that was already in place at the beginning of this year and is part of a limited-duration pilot program .
