After conquering Marvel, making us cry in Marriage Story and unleashing chaos in Lucy , Scarlett Johansson (New York, 40) faces her wildest challenge yet: surviving an island full of dinosaurs. And doing it with glamour . When everyone runs away scared, she maintains her impeccable style. Even wielding a flamethrower. Jurassic World: Rebirth, one of the most anticipated releases of the summer, promises to be a mix of adrenaline, nineties nostalgia and alpha feminism (the woman leads the way), all centered around a new underwater terror: dinosaurs that live in the water.
Scarlett plays Zora Bennett, a secret mission expert who leads an expedition to collect DNA from these prehistoric animals and create a drug that will save millions of lives. Amidst roars, failed genetic experiments, and a theme park, this new installment revives the franchise with a more feminine and sarcastic approach.
Behind the scenes
Although Johansson is one of the best actresses on the scene today, the American actress didn’t want to limit herself to acting alone. After appearing in over 100 films, Johansson decided to take things a step further just a few months ago.
In May of that same year, Scarlett made her directorial debut at the Cannes Film Festival with her debut film, Eleanor The Great . A drama starring June Squibb, the ninety-five-year-old actress who plays Eleanor Morgenstein, an elderly woman who, after losing her best friend, seeks to reconnect, befriending a nineteen-year-old girl.
The film is co-produced by Wayfare, Justin Baldoni’s production company, who is still engaged in a legal and media battle against Blake Lively.
Her Cannes debut was a huge success, and although this new directorial venture is very promising, she returns to the big screen today as the star of our favorite dinosaur saga.
From being sexualized to the highest paid
The actress made her film debut in 1994, at just 10 years old, playing Lauren in the film North . And although she’s now a global star, becoming the highest-paid actress in the industry in 2018 and 2019, Johansson’s career hasn’t always been a bed of roses. The actress has revealed how, after the film Lost in Translation , she felt pigeonholed into roles that objectified her: «I couldn’t get out of that circle.»
Still, she managed to break out of that cycle and become the actress she always wanted to be. Today, Johansson is considered the highest-grossing actress in history, and her films have grossed $14.5 billion worldwide.
Off-screen, the actress enjoys jazz and cooking. She is married to comedian Colin Jost, her third husband, and has two children, Rose and Cosmo. Although she’s an icon, she guards her privacy and enjoys the simple things, away from the noise of Hollywood. And the dinosaurs.
